2016 RYDER CUP .............
On Sunday, August 21,2016, at Westwynd Golf Club, Commissioner and CEO John Ciszewski welcomed the teams, introduced the Captains - and handed out the team uniforms for this years Ryder Cup. Brad Crighton will be seeking his third consecutive Ryder Cup, looking to lead his Wings to victory. Brad has appointed his Assistant Captains - Marc Summers along with Bryan Andrews, while also reluctantly announcing that Ryan Coyle has been retained as the Team Fashion Co-ordinator. A new Captain has been announced for the Tiger Nation - with Keith Dempsey taking over the reins of spoiler. Keith introduced his Assistant Captains - Eric Stephan and former Ryder Cup Captain Mike Flood, who will ensure their squad maintains ther dietary restrictions, and rigorous training schedule. A huge change to this years format with the addition of a step aside scramble, which will allow for teams to play together as a foursome. In addition - a Captains Feature Match - an 18 hole scramble worth double the point values has been included in Round 3.
Day 1 proved to be the closest scoring round of the entire event, with the result determined in the final match of the day.
The Red Wings eeked out a slim 91 - 89 advantage, and a lead, while ever so slight, they would never relinquish.
Day 2 brought a 36 hole challenge for the teams, and in the morning round the Red Wings came out firing on all cylinders, scoring a 43 point point advantage over the Tigers, and providing their Captain with a comfortable cushion heading into the Step Aside scramble, afternoon session. In the afternoon, a Captain's Choice Feature Match - 2 man scramble worth double points led off at the Jones course, while the step aside scramble was held at the Tradition, and Signature courses. Everyone had a great time, getting to play with their teammates for the first time, and not knowing the outcome of their matches until cards were compared after the completion of play. In addition, payouts for Team birdies and Team skins also made the day fun and bragging rights over dinner. This format was a rousing success, and provided the Wings with a 17 point victory, and increased their overall lead by 62 points going into Day 3, and Round 4. On Sunday, it was back to foursomes with best ball and alternate shot, chapman formats. The Red Wings won the day posting a 99 - 81 victory, and carried a 370 - 290 lead into Monday's single matches. With 360 points still up for grabs either team can pull out a victory. On Monday, the Wings gutted out a 183 - 177 win, to not only capture the final round, but retained the Ryder Cup for Captain Brad Crighton with a 553 - 467 victory. For the victors - Ryan Coyle, Brad Crighton, and Mike Long all posted perfect 5-0-0 records while for the Tigers Joe Tignanelli led his team with a 5-0-0 in a losing effort.
As a point of interest, this year we introduced a daily birdie / skin pool on each golf course, in each round. The pool money also included the closest to / long drive winners, with the funds divided against the number of winners. The big birdie / skins winners were Jimmy Mehlberg with 13, followed by Ron Clayton with 6, and Mike Schrauben, Mike Sherwood, and Patrick Traynor all getting 5 apiece.
